This Black History Month, we’re honoring the incredible Black musicians who shaped the music we love. Their rhythm, soul, and innovation laid the foundation for everything we do.
A few who inspire me: seeing John Coltrane as a teen and feeling pure magic, learning from Elvin Jones with Coltrane and how it shaped my playing with Jim, Sly Stone being ahead of his time, Jimi Hendrix playing like he was from another planet, bonding with Ray over Miles Davis, Bob Marley “healing” every time he played, and how Elvin Jones’ jazz influenced my drumming in The Doors.

Between a rock and a hard place...

This is the only answer to all this stress in the world.

Check out the interview I just did with Barry Robinson (Classic Album Review)
We start off talking about my new project with @mrchuckd of @publicenemy, doPE, how it came together, and why it means so much to both of us. Then we dive into the Doors’ early gigs at the London Fog, recording the debut album, and why we didn’t play Monterey or Woodstock. Part two is coming soon.. stay tuned.

On January 23, 2020, I took part in Homeward Bound, the inaugural benefit supporting PATH (People Assisting the Homeless).
I shared the stage with @officialrobbykrieger, Micah Nelson (@particlekid), and Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic on bass, all in support of expanding affordable housing services across California.
It was truly an honor to be part of a night dedicated to helping those in need.

Public Enemy’s Chuck D and The Doors’ John Densmore team up as doPE.
The two first crossed paths on a Record Store Day panel in 2014. About a year later, John received an email from Chuck that simply read: “You’ve got the beats, I’ve got the rhymes, let’s make doPE.”
Their debut album, no country for old men, arrives April 18 for Record Store Day and features “every tick tick tick,” officially named Record Store Day’s 2026 Song of the Year.
Stay tuned for more updates.

At the beginning of 1982, I got the chance to appear on SQUARE PEGS, the CBS series created by Johnny Slash. I popped up in a flashback scene, poking fun at early ’80s New Wave... good times.

Happy Birthday, @janisjoplin.
What Janis brought to the stage wasn’t polish or pretense, but truth. She sang from a place that couldn’t be faked, and she never tried to protect herself from feeling too much.
She was undeniable. I first saw her with Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Avalon and was blown away, then saw her once more at Woodstock in 1969.

Thinking of Jim Ladd today on his birthday. Like this photo, I’m still looking up to him... even though he’s across the bridge now.
Few people shared such a profound bond with the music he championed. Rock ’n’ Roll was part of who he was, and his passion set him apart.

It was a honor to re-connect with the ‘Master of Ceremonies’ of Woodstock, at Robby’s 80th birthday bash. Last time I saw Chip Monck, Tony nominated lighting designer, was when he secured me a spot on the side of the stage when Joe Cocker was playing. I looked out at a sea of a half million music fans, and thought peace & love were eminent.

Now that’s a point of view I like to see...

On this day in 1993, we were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
Proof that if you keep the beat long enough, someone eventually gives you a plaque for it.
Jim wasn’t there, but he was a huge part of the moment... as always.

It’s my old friend’s birthday today... we go way back 😉
Happy Birthday, @officialrobbykrieger. I’m grateful we’ve been “breaking through” together since our school days. From jazz class and meditation class, to that time we were in a band together (no big deal), and all the way to now.
