EXPLORING L.A. MYTHS
CONFERENCE from Santa Monica Mirror January 21 -
27, 2004 page 13
DENSMORE, OTHERS TO
EXPLORE L.A. MYTHS
Are Los Angeles residents
innocent victims of their own stereotypes or unwitting
perpetrators?
How does living in L.A. define the views
residents have of themselves and their society and does it
matter?
On Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February
1, John Densmore, founding member of The Doors, will lead a
diverse panel in a discussion about the cultural, sociological
and personal fallout of living in L.A.
The two-day
conference is designed to evaluate and chart the experience of
living in Los Angeles, as defined by the city's diversity,
history, mythology and culture.
Participants will
evaluate the significance of L.A.'s collective myths,
fantasies, and stereotypes and the ways the constant interplay
between fact and fiction, myth and reality affects its
citizens and the lives that they lead.
"Exploring the
mythology of Los Angeles, one of the great cultural and
intellectual capitals of our time, is the key to understanding
ourselves and the society that we immerse ourselves in," said
Dr. Brad TePaske, a Jungian analyst and conference
chairperson. "In Los Angeles, these myths, regardless of
whether we deny or embrace them, define ourselves, our view of
the world and through our media industry, influence the
collective consciousness throughout the world."
Densmore will discuss "The Flowering and Fading of the
1960s L.A. Music Scene." Other speakers include writer and
educator Michael Ventura on "Los Angeles: Where Myths Come to
Die," UCLA historian Dr. Christopher Gantner who will discuss
"Myth, Imagination, and the Making of L.A.," and Dr. TePaske
and fellow Jungian analysts, Dr. John Beebe, Gilda Frantz, and
Dr. Arlene Landau.
Sponsored by the C.G. Jung
Institute of Los Angeles, the weekend conference, "Myths of
L.A.", will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, January
31, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, February 1, at Mount St.
Mary's College in Los Angeles.
General admission
registration fee is $180 for advance ticket purchase and $225
at the door, students with a current I.D., $165. Boxed lunches
will be available at $20 for both days.
A limited
number of work scholarships are available. Please contact the
C.G. Jung Institute at (310) 556-1193 for information or to
